Member of the Month
Temple Beth Tikvah’s recording secretary, Karl Wittman, is this month’s Member of the Month.
A native of the Bronx, he attended New York public schools, graduated from City College (CCNY) with a Bachelor of Science degree, earned a Ph.D. in biology at the City University of New York (CUNY) and began his career as a research biologist and college professor. In time, Karl joined the New York State Education Department. He retired after 30 years as manager of a unit supervising New York State’s vocational education programs.
Long involved with computers and the web, Karl established a web design and web hosting company in Albany. After retirement from the New York State Education Department, Karl joined the faculty of the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, N.Y. There he teaches year round in the distance learning program via the internet.
A former president of Temple Israel in Albany, New York, he was also president of three other Albany-based Jewish organizations: B’nai B’rith lodge, Albany Jewish Family Services, and the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center. Karl received the B’nai B’rith Covenant Award as Person of the Year.
Photography is Karl’s passion and he has exhibited and won awards for his work. Today he also enjoys teaching photography at the Delray Camera Club, in his Florida community of Bellaggio, and occasionally at the Palm Beach Photographic Center. In his younger days, when he did some work as a commercial photographer, he had the opportunity to do portraits of a number of celebrities, including the noted opera singer, Jan Pearce; the folk singer and actor, Theodore Bikel; former United States Senator Jacob Javits; and former New York Governor Mario Cuomo.
Karl has been married to Helene for 47 years and they are the parents of three daughters. All are married and live in New York State. They have given the Wittmans four grandchildren. Eight years ago, Karl and Helene purchased their retirement home in Bellaggio. They now spend most of their time in Florida, where they enjoy a busy social life.
They joined Temple Beth Tikvah in 2005 and have been very active here. Karl was elected to its board of directors and then became recording secretary. In addition, Karl is a vice president of the Prime Timers of Beth Tikvah and a member of the Temple Membership Committee. Karl is also chairman of the TBT Website Committee, and developed the Temple’s new and modern website.
When he was interviewed for The Bulletin, Karl said, “I am an optimist. I foresee expansion of our religion and the future of Judaism through our young people. I hope the young people identify with the Conservative Movement.” Dr. Karl Wittman has done much for Temple Beth Tikvah, and his efforts are greatly appreciated
